WHALE RIDER MAKES ITS MARK AT THE US BOX OFFICE

Whale Rider has leapt into 15th place at the US box office after its third weekend of general release.

Opening in the US on June 6th with nine prints, the film has increased to 78 prints, and Whale Rider last weekend recorded the second highest screen average taking $US 7,722 per cinema, a figure only beaten by The Hulk in that picture’s opening weekend.

On the strength of this result the US distributor, Newmarket Films, will add an extra 145 prints this week.

The Trade press have acknowledged Whale Rider as the best reviewed film so far this year in North America.

Whale Rider is currently in its 22nd week of release in New Zealand cinemas, and its seventh week in Australian cinemas. Whale Rider will open in the UK on July 11th.
